EverWing Mock Assignment – Creating New Features

As with many online games, the aim for the developers is to improve the longevity of their product by introducing new features beyond post-release. However, this may not always be so easy; the player base can respond negatively to a new feature or character if these elements are deemed unfitting to the game’s universe, regardless of what the developers may believe. For example, Payday 2‘s new characters are often criticised for being too comical or uncharacteristic within the game’s serious nature as compared to the original four characters in Payday: The Heist.

In this mock assignment, a new game feature and character is created within an already established universe in mind – EverWing.

This new feature, Tag Battles, promotes cooperation and camaraderie by allowing players to form small groups of four with friends to play through the campaign story of EverWing, with the aim to complete Bounties and to achieve new high scores.

A new character, Unity, would be introduced with this update. As her name implies, not only does she shine when playing with other friends in Tag Battles by reducing the cooldowns of teammates and improving the combat efficiency of her dragons, but she embodies a fluffy, enigmatic characteristic to reflect her purpose – to act as the beacon that makes her friends stronger. Below is a document of the new Tag Battles game mode, with justifications and design considerations.

These ideas were created with extensive research done into the game beforehand. It was crucial to fully understand the quirks that make EverWing a game that is fun to play, before considering any new elements that could supplement the core features of the gameplay.
